The 14th AFA
Conference which was hosted by the Vietnam Association of
Accountants and Auditors (VAA) and supported by the Vietnam
Ministry of Finance and AFA successfully held on 9 – 10
December 2005 at the Melia Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Conference was themed “Establishing
a Unified market for Accounting and Auditing Services in
ASEAN”.
Two plenary and two concurrent sessions were conducted in
the conference with topics including the impacts of
accounting and auditing services on the economic development
of ASEAN countries; addressing legal environment issues of
accounting and auditing services; convergence and
harmonisation of accounting and auditing standards;
professional training and training cooperation in the
region; and professional qualification requirements and
mutual recognition opportunities among member bodies.
The Conference was an exiting event with 22 presentations,
various ideas, and discussions. Keynote speakers and
participants provided technical and practical information on
the profession in AFA’s member bodies, exchanged and shared
experiences and solutions to steadily establish and develop
the ASEAN accounting and auditing market.
The Conference had confirmed that accounting and auditing
services are an integral part of business support in trade
in service activities, playing an important role to
stimulate economic development, transparent and healthy
investment and business environment in ASEAN countries.
It was also highlighted that regional and global integration
and ASEAN economic development require the establishment of
a unified services market for accounting and auditing. In
order to achieve the said objective, significant efforts of
AFA and each member body are encouraged to implement
solutions for the purpose of narrowing legal gaps,
harmonising accounting and auditing standards, promoting
ethical standards, unifying training programmes and modules
in accounting and auditing, and mutually recognising
professional qualification requirements among member bodies.
The Conference acknowledged the dynamic and vibrant
development of accounting and auditing services and the
profession in each country in the region. Activities of each
member body have laid the foundations and facilitated a move
towards a unified market for accounting and auditing
services in the near future in the region.
In addition, the Conference agreed to reaffirm the pledge to
accelerate information exchange, experience sharing,
cooperation and assistance among members to develop the
profession, giving priority to cooperation in training,
harmonising accounting and auditing standards, and mutual
recognition of professional qualification requirements
either on bilateral or multilateral basis.
Each professional organisation shall improve its activities
for the purpose of enhancing the status and reputation of
the accounting profession domestically and regionally, and
give feedbacks to their governments so that the AFA and its
member bodies will be involved more actively in the process
of establishing and operating national accounting and
auditing services markets as well as a regional unified
market, which in turn contributes to rapid, sustainable, and
prosperous economic development in the region and its
effective integration to the world economy.
